On the 05th of June 2026, GMV UK presented the results of NAVISP-EL1-023 bis, a project focused on lunar communication and navigation services, which they have conducted with their subcontractors Saphyrion SAGL (CH) and GMV Innovating Solutions S.R.L (RO).
The project developed, among the others, a software-defined receiver (SDR) for LunaNet’s Lunar Augmented Navigation Service (LANS), enabling lunar PNT capabilities. It is based on the AFS S-band signal, designed to mimic GNSS principles for multi-provider lunar navigation services. The real-time SDR receiver was implemented on a Zynq-7030 platform, including acquisition, tracking, decoding, and PVT computation.
End-to-end validation was performed using static, rover, and orbital scenarios, incorporating realistic error models (clock, multipath, noise). The results showed robust acquisition sensitivity and acceptable TTFF across use cases. PVT performance demonstrated meter-level positioning accuracy and stable velocity/clock estimation.
The activity was fully funded by ESA NAVISP Element 1, whose objective is to innovate PNT technologies. The slides can be accessed here.
