The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. With 67 institutes throughout Germany as well as numerous international research centres and liaison offices in Europe, the USA and Asia, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has an established reputation for excellence at the front rank of applied research and development. All institutes perform contract research and development for industry and public authorities. The majority of more than 24,000 staff is qualified scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research budget totalling more than 2.1 billion euros. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is one of the world’s leading application-oriented research institutions for microelectronic and IT system solutions and services. It ranks first among all Fraunhofer Institutes in size. With the creation of mp3 and the co-development of AAC, Fraunhofer IIS has reached worldwide recognition. In close cooperation with partners and clients the Institute provides research and development services in the following areas: Audio & Multimedia, Imaging Systems, Energy Management, IC Design and Design Automation, Communication Systems, Positioning, Medical Technology, Sensor Systems, Safety and Security Technology, Supply Chain Management and Non-destructive Testing. Since 1996 the Fraunhofer IIS specifically the Satellite Based Localization Systems (SLS) department is developing receiver components and multi-frequency receiver systems both for satellite navigation standards GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou as well as for geostationary satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS) such as EGNOS.
