On the 23rd of June 2026, Three Tensors (3T) presented, with their subcontractor Romanian InSpace Engineering S.R.L., the results of NAVISP-EL1-088, which investigated innovative navigation algorithms exploiting Factor Graph Optimization (FGO), both for a standalone GNSS unit and in combination with other sensors (INS), and for high- and mid-quality receiver modules.
The presentation explained the principles of FGO, then showed the System and Software Design and finally discussed the main results of the experimental campaign (including static and dynamic driving measurements, deep/light/sub-urban, and rural scenarios, local streets, arterial roads, county roads and highways).
With more than 25.5 hours of driving data, the project delivered a real-time (causal) FGO proof-of-concept testbed combining GNSS receivers, IMU, data acquisition, GUI monitoring, dataset replay, and FGO-based navigation processing.
Tightly Coupled FGO matched Weighted Least Mean Square on typical epochs, and was effective also on the worst ones.
This is the second contract completed, out of five awarded on the subject of FGO, whose ITTs received great attention from European industry in 2024. The first contract was completed in April 2026.
The activity was fully funded by ESA NAVISP Element 1, whose objective is to innovate PNT technologies, products and services. The slides can be accessed here.
