Development of the technology for quantum sensing, timing and imaging is a significant opportunity for companies and institutes creating the next generation of sensors and clocks for position, navigation and timing (PNT) capabilities. NAVISP is helping to invent the future of European navigation by supporting these actors in the development of Cold Atom Interferometers, quantum communications for authentication and time and frequency transfer and optical atomic clocks, enabling them to capitalise on market opportunities.
In the UK, a National Quantum Strategy was released in March 2023 with the ambition to accelerate quantum technologies for resilient PNT capabilities, and in October 2023 the release of a new framework for greater PNT resilience and innovation highlighted the need to protect Critical National Infrastructure in the event of a GNSS outage. Further scoping of technologies such as precise clocks and new systems to ensure continuous location and timing information are key to these strategies and NAVISP will work with the newly appointed National PNT office to support the UK in achieving these aims.
The Quantum Technologies Showcase was opened by George Freeman, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) and there were keynote presentations from high profile Quantum experts including Roger McKinlay, who leads the Quantum Technologies Challenge in UK Research and Innovation and is on the NAVISP Advisory Committee (NAVAC). At the event, a NAVISP representative connected with companies focussing on the commercialisation and industrialisation of quantum technologies addressing this market and supply chain. As a result, NAVISP anticipates several new projects involving actors commercialising their quantum sensor and clock developments, further demonstrating NAVISP support for the UK strategies and the competitiveness of the European PNT ecosystem in addressing PNT challenges.
