Belgian Space Technologies Call 2026
Belgian Defence, BELSPO and the European Space Agency (ESA) have launched the Belgian Space Technologies Call 2026 under NAVISP Element 2, inviting Belgian companies and research organisations to propose innovative developments in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT).
The call aims to strengthen Belgian and European industrial competitiveness while advancing resilient and autonomous navigation capabilities for future space systems.

Priority areas
  • Ultra-Stable Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs): Space-qualified IMUs supporting autonomous attitude, velocity and orbit determination in LEO and VLEO, including during degraded or unavailable GNSS, star-tracker or inter-satellite navigation inputs.
  • Celestial Navigation for Resilient Space PNT: Passive, onboard celestial-navigation technologies providing alternative orbit determination when GNSS, RF links, inter-satellite communications or ground infrastructure are degraded or unavailable.

Who can apply?
Eligible applicants include Belgian large enterprises, SMEs, start-ups and research centres, with universities and higher-education institutions able to participate as project partners. International cooperation with organisations from other NAVISP participating states is welcomed, provided the Belgian-funded activities are performed in Belgium.

Application process:
1. Outline Proposal: Submit an Outline Proposal through ESA's Open Space Innovation Platform (OSIP).
2. Pre-selection: Belgian Defence and ESA jointly assess the Outline Proposals and provide feedback to selected applicants.
3. Full Proposal: Selected applicants submit a Full Proposal through ESA-STAR. Belgian Defence then issues an Authorisation of Funding for selected activities, subject to a positive ESA evaluation.

Funding conditions
The indicated ESA contribution is typically EUR 500,000 to EUR 3 million per project, with the call specifying:
  • Below TRL 6: up to 25% ESA contribution and 75% industry contribution.
  • TRL 7-9: up to 50% ESA contribution and 50% industry contribution.

Interested Belgian organisations are encouraged to prepare early. ESA and Belgian Defence may not be able to provide technical discussions for Outline Proposals submitted less than 20 days before the deadline.
