307 - MIRA Space Optimization and pre-Industrialisation for PNT in LEO Missions
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-307
Start date:
Duration: 14 Months
Low-Earth-Orbit Positioning, Navigation and Timing (LEO PNT) has emerged as one of the most transformative developments in the space sector. As global dependence on precise navigation and timing intensifies, LEO‑based solutions are rapidly becoming a strategic complement, and in some cases a necessary alternative, to traditional Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) GNSS systems.
For several years now, with the support of ESA, STT has been developing a miniature embedded space clock aimed at making future LEO PNT systems more resilient, more autonomous, and higher-performing. The first version of the product (named mRO-50) is currently undergoing space qualification, and an IOD is planned in the coming months.
The objective of this project is to propose an upgraded technical solution to solve weaknesses of the current version of the product to be able to propose a stand-alone, state-of-the art miniature atomic clock fully compatible with the requirement of LEO-PNT constellations.
More precisely, STT aims to proactively address these future needs by upgrading the clock’s Physical Package (PP). This upgrade will involve: Reinforcing the PP to better resist shocks and vibrations, Improving thermal stability, Optimizing the internal mechanical design. Additionally, enhancements will be made to the mechanical assembly, and a refined selection of EEE (Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical) components will be undertaken.
This project will help raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the solution ahead of the next development phase, thereby reducing non-recurring engineering activities and shortening the overall development timeline.
