341 - OSNMA Proof-of-location Features for Drones

Status: On Going

Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-341

Start date:

Duration: 18 Months

Building on the successful outcomes of the ESA Kick-Start activity "Be a verifiable photojournalist!", the Verifiable ISTAR features of drones project aims to significantly enhance the trustworthiness of aerial information gathering. The project focuses on the integration of Galileo OSNMA (Open Service Navigation Message Authentication) into professional UAV platforms to provide high-assurance, spoofing-resistant positioning and timing for ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) missions.

By leveraging E-Group’s SDX stack and the advanced Airolit S1 drone platform, the solution ensures that every captured image or data point is cryptographically linked to a verified location and time at the moment of capture. This "security-by-design" approach addresses the critical challenge of data manipulation in high-stakes environments. The primary beneficiaries of this service include military sector (that applies civilian devices, as well), professional journalists and media organizations seeking to protect their reputation and provide immutable evidence of the authenticity of their work. Furthermore, the solution serves the broader public by empowering citizens to verify the integrity of the information they consume, ultimately supporting democratic values by providing a robust technological defense against the systemic threat of disinformation. The project is supported by the Ludovika University of Public Service (NKE/LUPS) as a champion customer, ensuring the solution meets the rigorous requirements of professional and institutional end-users.
