102 - Quantum Receiver for Navigation Applications

Status: On Going

Activity Code: NAVISP-EL1-102

Start date: 07/10/2025

Duration: 12 Months

Quantum sensing using Rydberg atoms offers a potential route to wide bandwidth, small, all optical reception of electromagnetic signals. The sensor is based on optical pumping of alkali metal vapour to a level which is resonant with incoming EM radiation; this impacts the optical transmittance of the vapour allowing optical readout of modulated signals.

This work will assess the potential to use Rydberg atoms for navigation applications for example using signals of opportunity – starting with an understanding of state of the art in literature and progressing to a practical demonstration of one or more key navigation- relevant features (e.g. AOA measurements, enhanced sensitivity etc.) using PA’s existing Rydberg atom testbed system.
