101 - MANTA (Muon-Augmented Navigation and Timing Architecture)
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL1-101
Start date: 16/02/2026
Duration: 24 Months
PNT satellite systems (i.e. GNSS) have become an integral part of contemporary society and economy. However, increasing reliance on continuous PNT availability raises concerns related to service disruptions, hardware failures, intentional jamming or spoofing, and operations in GNSS-denied environments.
The Muometric Positioning System (MuPS) uses galactic cosmic rays to enable positioning where satellite signals are unavailable or unreliable, without external signal transmission and immune to radio-frequency interference.
The MANTA objectives are:
(1) Develop and optimize the performance of a stand-alone MuPS, operating independently of other positioning sensors.
(2) Develop and optimize the performance of InPS, an integrated positioning system combining MuPS and complementary techniques.
(3) Demonstrate the advantages of MuPS and InPS for navigation underwater, underground, and deep indoor environments.
