Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography

The Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography (GUGiK) is the central Polish government administration body for geodesy and cartography. It performs tasks specified in the Geodetic and Cartographic Law and in Act on spatial information infrastructure. The president of GUGiK is the Surveyor General of Poland. GUGiK was established in 1945 and operates under the auspices of Ministry of Development and Technology. The two main facilities are located in Warsaw and currently GUGiK employs approx. 150 employees. The most important tasks of the Surveyor General of Poland include:

  • supervising realization of the national policy in the scope of land surveying and cartography,
  • maintaining the National Geodetic and Cartographic Resource,
  • creating and maintaining the geoportal of spatial information, as the central access point for services within a full thematic and territorial range of infrastructure,
  • being responsible for contacts with the European Commission.
  • The Surveyor General of Poland has been appointed as the National Contact Point on issues relating to the INSPIRE Directive.
  • In 2008, the GUGiK launched ASG-EUPOS system, a network of permanent GNSS reference stations providing services for precise positioning and navigation for geodesy, land surveying, construction and agriculture users. The ASG-EUPOS system is currently operating 150 reference stations with the coverage of the whole territory of Poland and all reference stations are tracking GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou signals.
