It was established to provide advanced digital infrastructure for higher education and research institutions. SURF originated in the 1980s as a collaborative effort among Dutch universities and research institutions to create a high-speed, secure, and reliable ICT infrastructure. Over the years, SURF has evolved into an organization offering services not only networking, but also cloud computing, cybersecurity, and collaborative tools and procurement services.
