Drones are an emerging technology with a wide range of applications capable of changing the people and goods transportation paradigm and the monitoring and control aspects in urban and extra-urban areas.

In this context, Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) techniques are essential for safe and reliable navigation, and GNSS receivers are implemented as a standard feature on almost all commercial drones. However, autonomous GNSS alone cannot meet all the requirements for safe and reliable flight, because the problems related to the environment in which it should be used (poor visibility, multipath, RF interference, etc.), and it is necessary to combine this technology with others (augmented, visual, inertial, etc.) to improve a drone's ability to navigate into urban areas.

The AURORA project falls into this area, having as its ultimate goal the development of an integrated facility for testing and validating the navigation capabilities of drones, and to support research and development of PNT solutions for UAM navigation. In this webinar, a description of what done during the AURORA Phase 1 is provided.

EL3-018 “AURORA" was funded by NAVISP Element 3, which is dedicated to support participating States in their national PNT strategies, promoting the development and promotion of GNSS and PNT products.
