Register for Final Presentation of the NAVISP EL2-150 Project: "Independent navigation for blind people - NaviBlind version 2.0 "
The navigation system NaviBlind, a NAVISP project carried out by NaviBlind ApS, aimed to develop a navigation app and a wearable device for the blind and visually impaired to use in outdoor navigation, employing GNSS technologies. The main objective included the creation of a wearable device for higher accuracy positioning (NaviCap) of high comfort and the development of proprietary software for the management of routes and users’ preferences.
NaviBlind has been designed to shorten orientation and mobility training for the blind and visually impaired. The navigation app can be downloaded and paired with the NaviCap, which hosts:
- A high-accuracy flat GNSS antenna embedded in the top of the cap;
- A small GNSS module situated in the back of the cap, which connects to the user’s smartphone.
The main NaviBlind features are:
- Accurate positioning of blind users via the NaviCap and RTK correction services.
- Guidance of blind users with vocal commands over complex urban routes, with detailed instructions on turns, stops and crossings, and correction of deviation from the path.
- Proprietary map datasets with features of interest for blind mobility employed in the creation of routes.
The NaviBlind app and NaviCap have been deployed in health centres in Denmark, and over 50 blind people have already benefited from it, significantly reducing training sessions and improving independence in outdoor mobility.
The NAVISP Project EL2-150 “Independent navigation for blind people - NaviBlind version 2.0 " was funded by NAVISP Element 2, which is devoted to supporting competitiveness of European industries.
