NAVISP EL2-115 "Road Sounder"

Start date: 12/02/2025 14:00

End date: 12/02/2025 15:30

The Road Sounder system represents a cutting-edge smart network designed for the automated monitoring of road pavement conditions, facilitating the implementation of an advanced Pavement Management System. This innovative system is structured around two primary components: the Road Sounder Cell (RSC) network and the Cloud.

The RSC is an on-board vehicle device that enables the system's "sounding" capability. It includes a Sensing Unit with accelerometers to measure the vehicle's response to road profiles and a Navigation Unit for precise location data. Each RSC autonomously collects, preprocesses (via its Computing Unit), and transmits data to the Cloud over the cellular network for further analysis.

The Cloud acts as the system's remote terminal, managing and processing payloads from the RSC network. It stores, processes, and aggregates data to provide real-time insights into road conditions. A microservice architecture ensures system flexibility, allowing for scalable resource allocation to balance cost and performance effectively.

End users can access and manage the processed data through a dedicated web application, which offers an intuitive interface for visualization and analysis. The project's key objectives include the development of RSC devices, the creation of an infrastructure capable of handling large volumes of real-time data, the design and implementation of a processing pipeline for assessing and geolocating road conditions, and the development of an effective user interface.

The NAVISP EL2-115 project "Road Sounder" was funded by NAVISP Element 2, which focuses on enhancing the competitiveness of the European industry in the Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) sector. This project underscores the commitment to leveraging innovative technologies for infrastructure management.
