The demand for accurate, reliable and secure timing transfer, from a number of different applications, is increasing. In April 2020, in the frame of the NAVISP Element 1 dedicated to innovation in PNT, Telespazio UK, working with Chronos Technology, started the EL1-011 “Resilient, Trustworthy, Ubiquitous Time Transfer” project.
Its main objective was to develop and demonstrate an innovative and effective hybrid (satellite and terrestrial) solution for time dissemination, transfer and synchronisation, aiming to provide cost-effective provision of ubiquitous, accurate, secure and reliable timing services for future commercial and mission-critical applications.
State-of-the-art time usage and performance requirements were reviewed and Use Cases for time transfer and synchronisation, with a target timeframe of 2025-2030, were characterised. This covered a variety of application sectors, including terrestrial telecommunication, the power grid, financial markets, avionics and IoT.
A number of candidate technologies were investigated. This contributed to the design of an architecture for a hybrid system-of-systems, which aimed to combine the strengths of both GNSS and terrestrial technologies.
From this design, a demonstrator system was produced, which could verify the capabilities of the Innovative Hybrid Timing Concept for time dissemination, transfer and synchronisation.
Finally, the results of the subsequent test campaign proved that the system can provide accurate timing, successfully mitigating against adverse effects to GNSS, such as constellation errors, interference and spoofing, and was ultimately considered a viable timing technology for all Use Cases with high accuracy requirements, that were investigated during this project.
