With the emergence of automatic vehicle navigation/V2V communication, the evolution towards autonomous vehicles and the increased development and usage of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), new challenges must be addressed. In vehicle safety management, for example, dangerous situations can arise if correct positioning, velocity or timing information is not available.
Key use cases to illustrate these challenges are:
- Highly automated highway driving assistant where some non-driving tasks are permitted for the driver
- Fully automated highway pilot where non driving tasks are permitted for the driver
- Autonomous robot taxi where no driver is present
Consequently, the availability of a highly accurate and reliable positioning solution is a key prerequisite for these new applications.
The goal of the NAVISP Element 2 project was therefore to design and develop a prototype of a modular GNSS sensor with focus baseband processing that will support automotive applications. The company strategy was to develop such device in the form of a “software radio” design that can be configured to allow its implementation in COTS system-on-a chip devices. This device is aimed to support multiple GNSS constellation with a multi-frequency.
The project was carried out in the frame of NAVISP Element 2, which is devoted to supporting competitiveness of European industries.
