Register for the Final Presentation of the NAVISP EL2 067 Project “AskWhere - Informational Support for Touristic Destination Selection and Trip Planning”
The project aimed at the development of a tool supporting the process of selection of travel destinations in reference to a vast set of criteria.
Total set of potentially possible destinations could be divided into three categories: destinations that user is not aware of, unavailable destinations, which are not possible to reach under assumed conditions and remaining set fulfilling requirements of availability and awareness to be further considered.
The proposed solution was expected to limit the unawareness of available options by expanding the user’s informational base. Accessing comprehensive description of all potential destinations over Europe increases likelihood of making informed and reasonable decision.
AskWhere is an application supporting selection of touristic destinations and trips planning. The app is available in the portal at https://askwhere.eu/. AskWhere application provides informational content and exploration tools tailored for support of the process of selection of travel destination in reference to a vast set of criteria. The service allows for interaction with noticeable informational resources. The service region was divided into 5 km wide cells, and coded with information on climate, air quality, landscape, services availability, accessibility, popularity, and costs. Individuals planning travels are aware of travel opportunities only up to certain level. Accessing comprehensive description of all potential destinations over Europe increases likelihood of making informed and reasonable decision. The app provides the following tools: Destinations Filter, Destinations Rating, Destinations Benchmarking, Trip Planner and Destination Info.
Destinations Filter. This is a tool that allows to find locations in Europe that fits user’s criteria for potential travel destination. It bases on regular grid of 5km wide hexagonal cells covering application service region. Each cell – destination – is described with wide variety of criteria. Using Destination Filter users can select those that meet their expectations. User’s filters can be uploaded into the app, as well as removed, shared and renamed.
Destinations Rating. The tool allows users to rate the locations, save and share them.
Destinations Benchmarking. This tool allows for comparison of entire characteristics of up to five selected destinations. Previously stored benchmarks can be reloaded, removed, and shared.
Trip Planner. The tool allows users to plan a trip to get to know places and their surroundings, as well as longer journeys by car, e.g. from home to a selected destination. There are three modes of routing available: driving, walking and cycling. The route is available for downloading as a GPX file that can be use in mobile devices, i.e. smartwatches.
Destination Info. This tool displays characteristics of destination as descriptions (i.e. landscape type and landscape attractiveness), graphic scale (i.e. touristic popularity or accessibility of restaurants), actual values (i.e. time of travel from the nearest airport – airport accessibility) and charts (for time variable climate parameters, i.e. average monthly sunny days).
The project was carried out in the frame of NAVISP Element 2, which is devoted to supporting competitiveness of European industries
