Slides of NAVISP EL2-149 Final presentation now available
On Friday, November 15th, 2024, Geospatial Ventures and satsense presented the results of the NAVISP EL2-149 project: “AIPLAN - Artificial Intelligence for Land Planning.”
The growing demand for accurate, cost-effective monitoring—particularly for geohazards, aging infrastructure, and land development—has driven advancements in geospatial technologies. Key to addressing this need is the integration of GNSS and Inferometric Synthetic Aperture (InSAR) technologies, enhanced by Machine Learning (ML).
The AIPLAN project aimed to deliver advanced solutions for infrastructure and environmental monitoring by combining a custom GNSS receiver with InSAR technology and AI/ML for anomaly detection and improved accuracy. Trials at Spen Farm (Tadcaster), Snake Pass (Derbyshire), and BCIMO (Dudley, UK) validated the system’s real-world performance, achieving horizontal and vertical accuracy of 3–4 mm. Trials included structural health monitoring, land movement detection, and infrastructure stability assessments. Hardware and firmware were designed for cost-efficiency, durability, and precision, with solar-powered GNSS modules providing real-time updates and integrating seamlessly with the “GVL Tracking and Visualisation Platform” for actionable insights.
Performance evaluations showed AIPLAN’s effectiveness in monitoring structural health, detecting anomalies, and supporting planning and maintenance. GNSS measurements achieved daily repeatability of ~2 mm, with AI/ML smoothing errors and enhancing long-term accuracy.
By the project’s end, AIPLAN established a strong foundation for advanced monitoring. Next steps include ongoing data collection, further GNSS/InSAR integration research, and visualization improvements to prepare the system for market adoption.
The project was part of NAVISP Element 2, supporting innovative concepts, techniques, and technologies in the PNT sector. The AIPLAN project exemplifies how ESA’s support can accelerate the development of impactful solutions for global challenges. The slides are accessible here.
