On Monday, August 22, the European Space Agency signed a Memorandum of Intent with ERTICO-ITS Europe, a Public Private Partnership for the European Road Transport Telematics Implementation Coordination, focused on the development, promotion and connection of intelligent road systems and services.

The activities of this partnership fall under the focus area of Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) and related platforms supporting, among the others, Clean and Sustainable Mobility. The Memorandum looks to extend the use of ESA space technology along European roads and is intended to support and promote the development and commercialization of future, more sustainable technologies in the transport and mobility sector.

GNSS and general PNT systems have the ability to provide commercial solutions for automated and connected driving, but they also facilitate the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon, and greener economy and therefore play an important role in the current, but even more so in the future mobility sector. So when it comes to the development and implementation of CCAM systems, the automotive industry is just as much in demand as the PNT community: Autonomous and connected vehicles need to be equipped with a multitude of sensors and actuators, generating a large amount of data in real-time that must be processed and analysed to make timely decisions. To support and accelerate the transition to a more connected, collaborative, automated and sustainable society, ESA's NAVigation Innovation and Support Program (NAVISP) will work closely with ERTICO - ITS Europe on these common goals.

The signature of the Memorandum of Intent between ERTICO and ESA will allow the two organisations to exchange knowledge and expertise to advance the future of automated and sustainable mobility, improve the reliability of data and make the sector, its services and products stronger and more reliable with space technology.

Stay tuned for more information, opportunities and updates coming soon!
