On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, a consortium led by Fugro Norway AS presented the results of the NAVISP EL3-011 activity “In-Orbit Demonstration of PPP onboard NorSat-TD”.

The project aimed to demonstrate Precise Point Positioning (PPP) in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and without requiring additional ground infrastructure. The SpaceStar software was integrated into a software-defined radio (SDR) and flown as a payload on the NorSat-TD satellite.

Despite challenges such as an eMMC failure and early deorbit due to propulsion issues, the mission successfully demonstrated:

Real-time onboard PPP with position accuracy better than 10 cm

Velocity accuracy in the 5–11 mm/s range

Time accuracy below 1 ns RMS

Robust performance during GNSS outages and spoofing events

Significant improvements over standalone GNSS in terms of accuracy and integrity

The project was fully funded by NAVISP Element 3, which supports strategic cooperation across member states in Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies. The slides of the final presentation can be found here.
