On October 8, 2025, Indra Navia and partners presented the results of the NAVISP EL2-100 activity “Advanced GBAS Performance for CAT II/III Precision Approaches”.
The project focused on enhancing Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS) capabilities to support Category II and III precision approaches, which require extremely high integrity, accuracy, and availability. The team investigated advanced techniques to meet ICAO GAST-D+ and GAST-E performance specifications.
The system was designed, simulated, and validated through rigorous testing and analysis, including:
Development of advanced threat models and mitigation strategies
Evaluation of signal integrity and continuity under challenging conditions
Simulation of CAT II/III approach scenarios with real-world constraints
Assessment of system performance against ICAO standards
Key results include:
- Feasibility of GBAS for CAT III Decision Heights (DH) down to 50 ft
- Integrity risk levels below 1×10⁻⁸, meeting stringent aviation safety requirements
- Enhanced robustness against ionospheric anomalies and multipath effects
- Clear roadmap for future certification and deployment in operational environments
The project was co-funded by NAVISP Element 2, which supports the competitiveness of PNT technologies in partnership with European industry. The slides of the final presentation can be found here.
