On October 2, 2025, Space for Life (S4L) presented the results of NAVISP project EL2-113. The project aimed to develop a cost-effective, GNSS-based system for monitoring the structural health of bridges and viaducts, addressing the growing need for safety and compliance in ageing infrastructure networks.
The system was designed, developed, and validated through a comprehensive process, including:
- Development of PONTI-Box, a dedicated sensor unit with high-accuracy accelerometer and GNSS receiver
- Design of PONTI-App for smartphones to collect and transmit sensor data
- Implementation of PONTI-SPC+, a scalable cloud-based Storage & Processing Centre with advanced analysis algorithms
- Multi-level data processing (GNSS track filtering, FFT/STFT analysis, and frequency aggregation)
- Field demonstrations using bus fleets across multiple viaducts
Key results include:
- Acquisition of 62,800 passes across 21 viaducts using 21 buses
- Successful data collection and processing under real conditions
- Identification of limitations: low frequency resolution (1 kHz sampling), GNSS anomalies in tunnels, and vehicle-induced damping
- Lessons learned: need for higher sampling rates (15 kHz), improved business model, and enhanced PONTI-Box design
- Clear roadmap toward PONTI-Box Plus integrated in a dedicated van with AI-driven analysis for optimized monitoring
The project was co-funded by NAVISP Element 2, which supports the competitiveness of PNT technologies in partnership with European industry. The slides of the final presentation can be found here.
