Intelligent transportation systems play an important role in today's society and focus on the application of sensing, analysis, control, and communication technologies, especially in road transportation, to improve safety, mobility, efficiency but also sustainability.

To support and accelerate this development and to further advance the application of space technologies   in the ITS sector, ESA signed a memorandum of intent with ERTICO ITS EUROPE last August. The first   result of this collaboration is the recently launched thematic window PNT for CCAM under the NAVISP   programme, in which the agency is calling on industry to submit their ideas to support and accelerate   the transition to a more connected, automated, and sustainable transportation sector through the use   of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Data (PNT) for connected, collaborative, and automated   mobility (CCAM).

ERTICO ITS EUROPE is a public-private partnership established in 1991 with the aim of developing,   promoting and implementing smart mobility services by creating a multi-stakeholder action platform.   Today, ERTICO consists of more than 120 companies and organizations representing service providers,   suppliers, the traffic and transport industry, research, public authorities, user organizations, mobile operators   and vehicle manufacturers. Overall, ERTICO promotes and facilitates the deployment of Intelligent   Transport  Systems and Services (ITS) in Europe through a variety of European co-funded projects, innovation   platforms, international collaboration, advocacy and events.

Next year, ERTICO is organizing together with the European Commission the 15th ITS European Congress, themed ITS Game Changer, in Lisbon to showcase the latest technologies and ITS services and solutions in Europe. Various topics will be covered, including cooperative, connected and automated mobility, new mobility services, freight and logistics, digitalization and the data value chain, and future traffic management. Within these topics, the ITS European Congress offers the possibility to learn about opportunities and challenges as well as the benefits and potential solutions related to Smart Mobility. The Congress is also an opportunity to establish connections and partnerships within the ITS ecosystem at large to improve the lives of citizens.

This week, the topics for the plenary sessions were announced, highlighting the focus areas of the ITS Congress including:

  • Topic 1: Digitalisation – what can mobility users expect?
  • Topic 2: Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility: How green can you go?
  • Topic 3: Integrating road, rail, air and waterborne – multimodality by any means?
  • Topic 4: Managing urban mobility space – what can we expect from cities in the future?

These high-level sessions offer the opportunity to bring together panellists and keynote speakers from various sectors, industry groups and domains to address cross-cutting topics. Important and influential stakeholder representatives discuss strategic and substantive breakthroughs in ITS, related to the Congress' key topics.

Stay tuned for more actions taken by ERTICO and ESA NAVISP to shape the future of the Road transportation sector in Europe!
