On 10th September 2025, Telespazio UK, together with Thales Services, M3 Systems, and Chronos Technology Ltd, delivered the final presentation of the NAVISP EL1-040 Next Generation Network Assisted PNT Assurance (NG-NAPA) project. The objective was to design, develop, and demonstrate a robust, network-assisted PNT assurance system, leveraging both GNSS and Signals of Opportunity (SOOP) such as 5G, LTE, and Iridium satellite signals.
GNSS spoofing and jamming are nowadays daily issues, which are impacting critical infrastructure and transportation sectors. The NG-NAPA team developed a system architecture that incorporates authentication and integrity methods to safeguard against those threats. The project involved creating both hardware and software demonstrators, with a real-world testbed implemented at various locations in Europe.
The main outcomes of the project were outlined during the presentation.
- Successful demonstration of hybrid GNSS+SOOP positioning and timing, with cloud- based processing and scalable reference network architecture.
- The demonstrator supports Galileo, GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS, Iridium. Starlink might be added in the future
- Performance benchmarking showed that Iridium-based timing can provide assurance even when GNSS is jammed and GNSS-encrypted (Galileo E6C & GPS P(Y)) positioning offers resilience against spoofing.
- The testbed was benchmarked and proven to be effective in various locations in Europe.
The next steps are to upgrade some of the hardware components, improve signal processing pipeline, and extend the compatibility with more SOOPs. The NG-NAPA project was fully funded by NAVISP Element 1. The slides of the final presentation are available here.
