The European Space Agency’s Navigation Innovation and Support Programme (NAVISP) has signed a new contract under Element 2 for the project Integrated Proof of Concept for real-time Automotive user case with STEP (I-PoCARS). This initiative brings together leading industry players, including Vodafone Ltd. and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) as a key partners, alongside renowned academic and research institutions from the United Kingdom and Italy. The project is fully supported by the UK Space Agency (UKSA) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI), demonstrating how European collaborations can not only strengthen technological capability, but also drive economic growth by fostering innovation, supporting high-value industries and creating opportunities for new commercial applications.

I-PoCARS aims to revolutionize vehicle localization and positioning for connected and autonomous vehicles. By integrating onboard systems with terrestrial and space-based navigation sources, the project seeks to deliver a robust architecture that enhances positioning accuracy and resilience. This approach addresses critical challenges such as interference, jamming, and spoofing of GNSS signals, ensuring safety and reliability in advanced driver assistance systems.

Leveraging 5G and satellite connectivity and cutting-edge AI technologies, I-PoCARS will develop a test-drive facility design to support next-generation autonomous driving functions. The collaboration underscores NAVISP’s commitment to fostering innovation in the automotive sector and enabling secure, real-time navigation solutions.

With a total project cost exceeding €2.2 million and ESA co-funding of approximately €1.47 million, this 12-month project marks a significant step toward safer and smarter mobility solutions for the future.
