Developed as part of the NAVISP 3 funded project Advanced Radio Frequency Interference Detection, Alert and Analysis System (ARFIDAAS), the multi-frequency GNSS RFI monitors have now been actively monitoring the environment at multiple sites in Norway and Europe for the past two years.
In 2021, the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) has located several sources of harmful GNSS signal interference with the help of notifications and reports produced by the ARFIDAAS monitoring stations in Norway. The potentially most serious incident involved the apprehension of a jamming device in close proximity to the Norwegian Air Ambulance base in Trondheim. In this case, a jamming device was located by Nkom and the operator fined after the device was detected by a nearby ARFIDAAS station.
The ARFIDAAS monitoring system covers the entire GNSS L-band and is designed to send low latency notifications to the site operator containing details of detected RFI events to allow site operators to respond appropriately, while also capturing the events for centralized analysis. The project operates a centralized database of captured multi-band RFI events including raw data, analysis, and reporting products which can be made available on request.
