On November 18, 2024, the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS), Business Finland and the NAVISP Programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) hosted the National PNT Workshop in Espoo, bringing together 45 attendees from diverse sectors. The event highlighted the critical role of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems in modern society while addressing the vulnerabilities and challenges associated with them.
Participants explored technical issues such as jamming, spoofing, and infrastructure resilience, with a particular focus on enhancing the robustness of receiver systems and leveraging new signals. The event emphasized the growing need for improved accuracy, reliability, and seamless integration of PNT technologies into interconnected systems, from autonomous vehicles to financial networks.
Opportunities for collaboration were identified in areas such as jamming and spoofing mitigation, advancing receiver resilience, and applying cutting-edge technologies like multi-constellation GNSS, sensor fusion, and quantum-based PNT systems. These innovations are poised to bolster Finnish capabilities in key industries, including IoT, and logistics.
The workshop highlighted Finland’s strong PNT ecosystem, with contributions from SMEs, research institutions, and established companies. It also underscored the country’s strategic position in advancing European PNT initiatives through ESA’s NAVISP Programme. Personalized consultations and cross-sector discussions further enabled participants to align on priorities and explore new partnerships.
This focused and collaborative event strengthened Finland’s leadership in PNT resilience and innovation, addressing current vulnerabilities while unlocking new opportunities in the rapidly evolving PNT landscape under the NAVISP programme.
