174 - A White Rabbit based implementation of Coherent Clock

Status: On Going

Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-174

Start date: 11/06/2023

Duration: 24 Months

Coherent Clock project will build a resilient and secured GNSS time solution based on several GNSS receivers distributed at metro-wide distances and able to combine their timing information into one global solution to optimize the accuracy of the time source and to provide synchronization to the core and aggregation network. This ground-based time distribution system is based on the use of the recently approved IEEE-1588-2019 standard that includes the High Accuracy Default Precision Time Protocol which is intensively based on the White Rabbit PTP (WR-PTP) for sub-nanosecond accuracy synchronization. By combining the Packet over Transport aspects – Synchronization, quality and availability targets ITU recommendations with the use of the ultra-accurate WR-PTP we can create a WR based Coherent Clock that will be able to provide a) responsiveness to GNSS disruptions (PRTC-B); b) ePRC capabilities; and c) ultra-accurate time distribution (subns). In addition, the ITU-T is elaborating new recommendations for the future 5G landscape, and this proposal will establish the basis for its implementation. Coherent clock will extend previous ideas to address a fully operative networked and dependable clock that will provide a kind of distributed clock ensemble mechanism that is the basic of this proposal.
