166 - STING: NewSpace COTS-based Relative GNSS solution for In-Space Services and Distributed Space Systems
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-166
Start date: 15/01/2024
Duration: 22 Months
Relative navigation technologies are crucial for advanced space missions. In the NewSpace market, there are two key trends that are revolutionising spaceflight: Distributed Space Systems (DSS) and In-Space Logistics. Determining the relative states between satellite vehicles is fundamental in S/C formation flying and rendezvous. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can provide centimetre-level or better relative navigation solutions through differential signal processing techniques on cooperative satellites. Relative GNSS (RGNSS) technology is essential for NewSpace market to achieve accurate relative states without constraining the operations. Lúnasa is developing a relative navigation product based on RGNSS to target DSS and In-Space Logistics markets. The project aims to mature Lúnasa’s relative navigation system from TRL 2 to TRL 6. Lúnasa will develop reliable and accurate relative navigation algorithms, integrate them in COTS components to build a competitive relative GNSS prototype, test the prototype in a High-Fidelity simulated environment, and developed a business strategy to launch the product into the market.
