108 bis - Assessment of Time and Frequency Transfer Techniques for Resilient Regional (Transnational) UTC Infrastructure

108 bis - Assessment of Time and Frequency Transfer Techniques for Resilient Regional (Transnational) UTC Infrastructure

Status: On Going

Activity Code: NAVISP-EL1-108

Start date: 04/09/2025

Duration: 18 Months

This activity will demonstrate a fiber-optic technique for high-precision time and frequency transfer as a robust complement to GNSS, enabling UTC distribution across geographically separated and even transnational sites. Building on Cycle’s long-standing expertise in stabilized RF transfer over short-range fiber-optic links, the work will advance this capability to long-haul distances exceeding 30 km. The demonstrator platform, named FORTIS (Fiber-Optic Reference Transfer for Interregional Synchronization), will provide simultaneous distribution of 1PPS and 10/100 MHz signals with integrated delay compensation, redundancy, and automated fallback logic. By combining long-range stabilization and hierarchical failover into a unified system, FORTIS will validate fiber-optic transfer as a resilient solution for UTC-compliant synchronization in scientific, industrial, and critical infrastructure applications.
