304 - Multi-Frequency Alternative Position, Navigation and Timing
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-304
Start date: 16/02/2026
Duration: 26 Months
The proposed project named Multi-Frequency Alternative Position, Navigation and Timing (MF-APNT), will analyse, design, construct, demonstrate, measure and evaluate a new approach for distributing Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) signals. The system concept is based on adding spread spectrum signals onto broadcasting and communication channels, hopping between frequency bands, and by doing so providing a jamming and interference resilient solution.
Existing satellites in various orbits (GEO, HEO, MEO and LEO) can be utilized to obtain good geometric constraints for positioning and navigation purposes. By utilizing existing space infrastructure, investment cost is kept low compared to developing a dedicated PNT satellite constellation and reducing time-to-market.
The system will be fully independent of existing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), providing a valuable alternative – or backup – source of PNT to maritime and land-based users.
