Currently train location is guaranteed by track circuits (short cut made by the axles of bogies), or still by counting of axles (counting in the input-output wheel number from the segment), more recently by beacons RFID. These trackside elements require the installation of cables (formerly cupper or newly optical fiber) all along the tracks.
It is costly and thus might not be accurate and flexible enough to optimize the traffic.
The objective of the project is to bring the SSM technology from laboratory-based prototype running (TRL3) to a railway certifiable product (TRL7), using two constellations GPS L1/L5 and Galileo E1/E5, combined with SBAS correction data from EGNOS.
The Key deliverable of the project is GNSS Receiver DFMC, with the ‘on request’ correlation function defined in SSM in a housing certified for SIL2 application meeting 2m for track detection and 20 m in long track accuracy, with a rate of critical failure lower than 10^-5.
