RFI - Rete Ferroviaria Italiana is the company of the Ferrovie dello Stato Group with the public role of Infrastructure Manager. As the body responsible for the track, the stations and the installations, RFI ensures to Italian Project Team railway undertakings the access to the railway network, performs the maintenance and the safe circulation on the whole network, manages the investments for the upgrading and improvement of railway lines and installations and it develops the technology of systems and materials. Presently, operational lines are over 16,700 km long; RFI is one of the early adopter of the ERTMS standard and is leading the ERSAT initiative to introduce the satellite technology into the ERTMS by participating to several ESA and H2020 projects and being the coordinator of the ERSAT GGC project.
