NAVISP EL1-057: "VDES-R Advanced User Technologies for Alternative PNT”
On March 21th, 2025, Telespazio UK and Kongsberg Discovery presented the final results of the NAVISP EL1-057 project, focused on enhancing alternative positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) for maritime use through advanced VDES-R technologies. The project aimed to improve the accuracy and resilience of maritime PNT systems by integrating VDES with satellite and terrestrial networks.
Key achievements of the project were:
- Proof of Concept Development: Developed and tested proof of concepts for signal design, multi-epoch Doppler positioning, and differential positioning to improve accuracy in ocean and harbour environments.
- Multipath Mitigation: Demonstrated methods to reduce the impact of multipath interference, a key challenge in maritime settings due to water reflections.
- Testing and Lessons Learned: Real-world tests highlighted multipath as a significant factor affecting performance, but the combination of VDE-SAT (satellite) and VDE-TER (terrestrial) solutions showed promise for reliable maritime PNT.
Next steps involve further technology development and testing to address remaining challenges, with the goal of providing a resilient and accurate PNT solution for maritime operations.
This project was fully funded by NAVISP Element 1, which aims at supporting innovation along the complete PNT value chain.
