On 6 October, the PNDC (formerly the Power Networks Demonstration Centre) and Fundamentals hosted a joint interactive online workshop, which was organised as part of the GridCell project, a NAVISP Element 2 activity EL2-084.

Within GridCell, five key technologies are being integrated — Accurate Resilient Timing, Smart Power Sensors, AI-based resource scheduling, Smart Network Control and Smart Contracts. The aim is to form a highly innovative solution which creates significant new opportunities for grid management within the context of increasing renewables penetration.

GridCell is based around a new paradigm — the Smart Power Cell (SPC, or ‘Cell’). The Cell will combine local load, storage and power generation assets into an integrated smart power element which can operate either fully connected to the grid or, in the case of either full or partial grid failure, completely autonomously, maintaining supplies for local consumers.

The workshop discussed community energy trading and detailed the latest work from the project. It was introduced by keynote speaker John Scott, Company Advisor and Community Energy Lead.
