245 - SoLPOINT - Safety of Life Positioning and Operational Integrity for Automated Trucks
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-245
Start date: 30/06/2025
Duration: 18 Months
The SoLPOINT project addresses the critical challenge of ensuring the safe operation of highly automated trucks, which is crucial for the advancement of autonomous driving. In accordance with emerging regulations like the German Act on Autonomous Driving (§AFGBV = “Autonome-Fahrzeuge-Genehmigungs-und-Betriebs-Verordnung”), SoLPOINT will develop and implement a state-of-the-art technical supervision service. This service will provide continuous, real-time monitoring of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and connectivity performance within the truck's operational domain.
Key features and objectives:
• Safety-critical monitoring: SoLPOINT focuses on "Safety of Life" (SoL) by monitoring GNSS signal integrity and connectivity, detecting potential hazards such as jamming or spoofing that could compromise vehicle safety.
• Vehicle-agnostic approach: The system employs a network of roadside sensor units (RSUs) to monitor GNSS and connectivity performance independently of the vehicle's onboard systems. This ensures an unbiased and reliable assessment of the operational environment.
• Early warning system: SoLPOINT provides timely warnings to automated trucks about compromised GNSS or connectivity, enabling them to take proactive measures to mitigate risks and maintain safe operation.
• Future-proof design: While initially utilizing existing GNSS signals like Galileo and GPS, SoLPOINT is designed to integrate future technologies such as LEO-PNT (Low Earth Orbit Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) to enhance its capabilities and ensure long-term effectiveness.
