There's huge untapped potential from wind power at high altitudes. The Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES) provides access to these higher and powerful winds using a compact tethered aircraft.
One of the problems of the AWES is to have a reliable navigation solution that functions even in case of GNSS outages. DroneHome project aims to tackle that problem by developing a very low cost and highly reliable local positioning system that can provide 10 cm of relative positioning accuracy with 100 Hz update rate and an operating range up to 1 km. This is possible with the use of ultra wide band positioning techniques. The end product is going to be a complete navigation suite that is accurate enough to perform fully automated take-off and landing maneuvers on off-shore floating platforms even in case of GNSS outages.
