Accucom has investigated through in-depth research and PNT market intelligence that L5 fully autonomous vehicles cannot be successfully and safely deployed using Satellite-only based navigation due to the need for fully reliable real-time positional accuracy of 15cm (required >95% of the time) and the urban landscape in particular can be a difficult environment for navigation with GNSS; and is the area where greatest accuracy will be required.

Previous studies such as ‘The Blackett Report – Satellite-derived time & Position’ have highlighted the requirement for multiple systems to work in harmony to mitigate the risk of threats and vulnerabilities; therefore the successfully deployed L5 navigation solution is likely to be a combination of technologies and systems (onboard & external). Accucom are aiming to support resolution of the unmet market need for highly accurate, real-time, robust and reliable positioning technology - that is always available in all operational scenarios - by entering the PNT sector with a disruptive technology that provides a low-cost ‘navigation anywhere’ terrestrial positioning system which can augment other available technologies all working holistically to provide the safe and reliable L5 solution.

The NAVISP EL 2 project is Phase 1 of a 3-phased approach to developing a fully mature market-ready commercially deployable system. The purpose of Phase 1 is to provide a ‘Proof of Concept’ demonstrator system using RF technologies to determine range and accuracy parameters and future stage system design and development activities.

The project was carried out in the scope of NAVISP Element 2, which is devoted to supporting competitiveness of European industries.
