057 - Developing Real World A-PNT Solutions
Status: On Going
Activity Code: NAVISP-EL2-057
Start date: 01/11/2020
Duration: 24 Months
The ‘Developing Real World A-PNT Solutions Project’ will establish a multi-user, accessible service to deliver progressive, high-value experimentation and proof of concept activities to enable BVLOS drone operations in non-segregated airspace. A key tenet of this enterprise will be the establishment of novel A-PNT services which will accelerate capabilities necessary enable future drone operations at scale and in more demanding airspace. A key feature of the proposed service will be a new and unique ‘National BVLOS Experimentation Corridor’ (NBEC) sited at the Cranfield in Central England. The NBEC provides a unique test and experimentation ‘sandpit’ working with key stakeholders to facilitate the development of enabling A-PNT capabilities (such as connecting a drone to the terrestrial cellular network to deliver communication; identification and location capabilities as well as providing a Detect & Avoid Solution for non-segregated drone flight), regulatory frameworks, operating concepts and performance standards necessary to allow unmanned aircraft to fly in the same airspace as manned aircraft. The NBEC will help improve the capability and competitiveness of the industry by facilitating the cross-fertilisation between space-based and terrestrial positioning technologies.
