Various 5G terrestrial positioning techniques have been studied and demonstrated by the 3GPP, so positioning accuracy and availability with 5G terrestrial networks is a well- established concept and several positioning methods are defined in 3GPP; however, position integrity with 5G private networks seams largely un-investigated. If 5G is to be used for reliable positioning, then further investigation of position integrity is required.

So, what is integrity? It is the level of trust that can be placed in the navigation solution, including the ability to warn the user, in a timely manner, when the system should not be used. A positioning integrity service depends upon on an understanding of the “threat space.” This comprises all possible events that can cause the calculated position solution to differ from the true position, irrespective of whether a specific fault can be identified in the navigation system. While integrity concepts and implementation in “traditional” navigation (especially GNSS) are well explored, this is the reverse for 5G positioning. If the benefits of using 5G for positioning are to come into fruition, then this situation needs to be addressed.
We shall investigate this in a modern industrial context.
