The project develops an advanced train positioning solution combining GNSS, 5G, and onboard sensors to ensure safe, accurate, and reliable localization, even in challenging environments like tunnels or urban areas. Its main goal is a high-integrity system compatible with future railway communications (FRMCS), enabling applications such as virtual balises, moving block operations, and enhanced traffic management. The approach includes designing a resilient Advanced Safe Train Positioning (ASTP) architecture, integrating multiple data sources, redundant processing, and continuous monitoring. Key activities cover system design, technology integration, algorithm development, prototype implementation, and validation. Expected impacts include safer operations, reduced trackside dependency, higher resilience, and support for digital and autonomous rail transport.
